While I can’t recall the exact day I discovered the account Louise Roe Home on Instagram, I can easily recall the beautiful rooms that grace its feed. Cozy interiors from Emma Ainscough, soulful spaces from Reath Design and most importantly glimpses of Roe’s stunning family home. If
’s name rings a bell but interiors aren’t your bread and butter, it’s probably because she has worked in the fashion and lifestyle industry for over 15 years. Roe has an impressive resume — former fashion editor-at-large for Glamour magazine, host of BBC's The Clothes Show, E!'s Fashion Police, E!'s Perfect Catch and more. And while Roe’s daily life has changed since those days (after 11 years in LA, she’s now back in England), she still maintains connections to that past while forging a very well-designed present with her wildly popular interiors account and her recently founded brand Sharland England.Established in 2021, Sharland England creates beautiful, hand-crafted rattan furniture, ceramics, linens and glassware. Named after Roe’s great-Grandmother, who lived in Buenos Aires and was the consummate hostess, the brand’s assortment is intended to bring a bit of warmth and comfort to the home.
I’ve followed Sharland England’s evolution and have always admired the pieces offered in their highly curated assortment. After recently connecting with Roe, I was curious to learn more about the why behind the brand and how the items in each collection come to life.
CP: I can recall watching you on red carpet coverage for NBC’s “Access Hollywood” (always looking so chic!) and now you've made this fabulous pivot to interiors. I'm curious at what point did you decide it was the right move? And if someone is looking to make that pivot, what would you tell them?
LR: That's so kind, thank you! I think when we moved back to England a few years ago, I was no longer in LA hosting those red carpets. I still miss them, but it felt very organic to cross over to interiors, as the industry captivated me. I still have a toe dipped into TV, but I'm all for embracing change and evolving your career and interests, as life moves forward.
CP: Before getting into your stunning brand Sharland England, I want to touch on your wildly popular Instagram account @louiseroehome. What was the impetus for starting that account? And at the time, did you know you'd be founding your own home company?
LR: No, I had zero idea - I wanted to show the restoration process of the house we moved to in the English countryside - an old Georgian rectory. I began sharing fabric swatches, trips to reclamation yards to match up old floorboards with the originals we had found under the carpet. We discovered a 30 foot Victorian mosaic under concrete slabs at the entrance hallway, and those followers helped me find tiny antique tiles to match. I love that account's community, and I still share inspiring images, trips to historical homes, and house updates, everyday.
CP: Sharland England currently offers rattan, ceramics, linens, glassware, candles and more. Why have you selected those specific categories?
LR: Rattan is at Sharland England's core. It's named after my great-granny, I never met her, but I grew up surrounded by all her antique cane and wicker furniture, which was beautiful. I think rattan is a rare mix of informal but elegant, and it warms up every room. We also have artisanal gift hampers, which I curated from lovely handmade brands, I adore them!
CP: I love that all of your products are handmade. With rattan products made in Indonesia, linens hand-loomed in India, etc. I'm curious, how do you go about finding the talented artisans you work with? Are there any special stories about the artisans that you can share?
LR: It's always a rabbit warren finding the best artisans, word-of-mouth or travelling to small villages, I love the chase! Discovering someone who makes beautiful work using indigenous techniques that have been passed down through many generations, is very special.
CP: I personally love beautiful ceramics. Can you share more about the artisans you work with in that category?
LR: Absolutely, we have a 7th generation family workshop in Puglia, Southern Italy; a wonderful lady who hand-paints our name on the bottom of her hand-thrown plates, and then a fantastic lady in Bulgaria, who makes our Marbre collection. Watching them at work is mesmerising, I am in awe!
CP: When it comes to the designs on your pieces, where are you sourcing inspiration from?
LR: Honestly, absolutely everywhere. I get inspired visiting National Trust properties, walking down a cobbled street in the Cotswolds, watching an old '80's movie, reading an old out-of-print vintage interiors book, finding an embroidered blouse at the flea market - my eyes are always open! That's the favourite part of my job.
CP: I love that you utilize so many of the Sharland England items in your home. Outside of those pieces, where do you find all of the unique treasures you have in each room? Any tips for sourcing to get the same effortlessly curated look you've achieved?
LR: Thank you! Sometimes I go to a huge antique fair like Kempton, and I am so keen to visit the Les Puces in Paris! If we are in a little village on the weekend, I will always sniff out the antique shop there, and usually collect something. Lastly, online is fantastic for sourcing antiques. Everything from Ebay and Etsy to LoveAntiques.com and smaller individual shops.
CP: For US readers, I saw you just announced that you'll be at the Ticking Tent in November. What should we expect to see from Sharland England during the event? And for those that can't make it to shop in person, where else can they purchase your pieces?
LR: Yes - my husband is joining me behind our stall and we can't wait! We will be bringing everything to Brooklyn from antiques and furniture to ceramics, glasses and napkins. Come and say hello on November 2nd! If you can't make it, you can order online www.sharland-england.com
